Referendum

There are six questions on the ballot which can be answered with yes or no. The voter can choose, whether to answer one, several or all the questions.

A vote is valid if at least one question of six is answered. As is prescribed in the legislation on elections to the Althingi, blank papers will be regarded as spoiled.

Regarding eligibility to vote, and the electoral register, the same arrangements apply as in general elections, with the difference that electoral registers will be based on the records in the National Register three weeks prior to the referendum.

Absentee voting (postal voting) begun on August 25.

Further information can be found at www.kosning.is.

Advisory referendum

The outcome of the referendum which the Althingi has now called will be of advisory value, in contrast to the situation in the referendums on the Icesave issue in 2010 and 2011.
